Discontentment
Why Enough is Never Enough
A few weeks ago, I was in Kearney
with a friend. We were talking about our struggles in our lives and the things
we wish we could change. As we sat there at the stop sign, he said something
that really stuck with me. He said, without batting an eyelash, “I wonder what
the next thing I am discontent with will be.” He moved on from that statement,
but it remained stuck in my mind.
I
think the main reason that I wrestled with that question so much is because I struggle
with discontentment on a daily basis. As I was thinking about how to write this
post, I was completely and utterly confused in regards to my approach. All I knew
was, I want to talk about discontentment. So, instead of talking about me and
my own discontentment, I want to encourage everyone (even if it’s only a few of
you) reading this post.
I
know 100% that I am not the only person that struggles with this particular
issue, so I turned to the only place that whole truth can be found… the Bible. I
found this verse in 2 Corinthians.
“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is
sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness’… Therefore I am well
content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with
difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”
12:9-10
This
verse resonates so much with our human nature. When we are discontent, we are
longing for something. We can find peace in knowing that no matter what our discontentment
is, God’s grace is sufficient and He will fill the longings of our hearts. The only
thing we have to do is to seek Him first. We can’t focus on what is going
wrong, we must look to Christ and ask what He has for us. Only then, only when
we are completely fixed on Him, will we be completely and truly filled and
satisfied.
