The Rule of Twenties
I have seen a lot of links shared on Facebook recently that all have a similar theme. "Things to do in your twenties." The people that post these often make lists of what should be done in your twenties. I really struggle with a few questions when I read these. Why is this necessary to a "happy" life? Why is there such a specific timeline? Who makes these rules?
The main message of these articles tends to follow along the line of, "be selfish with your time," "find yourself," and most importantly "DON'T YOU DARE GET MARRIED!" I have already told my stance on the whole marriage thing, but the selfishness and finding yourself really bugs me. First of all, why do these particular things in our lives require us to be in our twenties? Personally, I really don't agree with any of it. First off, being selfish with my time.
It is a known fact that young people have gobs of energy, the older you get, the less energy you have to pour out on others. Yes, you should give up your time to help people as you get older, but in your twenties you have so much time and energy to give. Being selfish is never a good thing, especially when it is with your time. I say, be gracious with your time. Help others, lay down what you have going on and do something for someone else, give your time freely, no matter your age. Secondly, find yourself in your twenties.
I hope to shout that I haven't "found myself" by the end of my twenties. In fact, I hope I never do. You may ask, "why do you never want to find yourself?" Here is my reason. The second I "find" myself is when I start to trust in myself to make my future. I want to never know who I am, I want to constantly be searching. Searching means that I have to place all of my faith and trust in the one who knows who I am. The one who created me for HIS purposes. I never want to fully know myself, because that would make God a non-essential in my life.
Now, having said my view on what other people say about what people in their twenties should do, I would like to share my view. My view happens to be the same view as the creator of the Universe itself...

1 Timothy 4:12
"Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity."
