An Act of True Love

I have recently become addicted to something... no need to stage an intervention. I have become addicted to the movie Frozen and its songs. I know, I am not alone in this new addiction, it has become a hit for a few different reasons. Reason #1- A family friendly film. It's about time to have a cute movie that is good for the kiddos and won't make the adults want to gauge their eyes out (graphic, I know). Reason #2- The music is FABULOUS! I mean, Idina Menzel, come on guys! Reason #3- The act of "true love." Personally this is the main reason that I was sold on this movie, besides the fact that I still have a 6 year-old girl inside of my somewhere that is just dying to be a princess.

Disney movies are notorious for their sappy love stories. Princess is completely helpless, prince saves her, they get married even though they just met. You know the story. Not that I'm complaining, but sometimes it gets a little old hat. Frozen had a refreshing twist of events at the very end. The girl actually saves herself, her sister, and the whole kingdom for that matter. Now, I am FAR from a feminist, but a little change of pace was much needed. Now, if the girl saved everyone by herself, it would be a bit like Mulan, but there is a different element to it... selflessness.

I am not going to belittle the fact that Mulan helped to save China, but hers was an act of heroism. In the context of Disney, true love usually means a prince and a princess. In Frozen it was between two sisters. The act of true love was one sister laying down her life for the other and showing how much she loved her sister, enough to give up her own life to save hers.

In a society where romantic love is cheapened by "love" game shows, smutty novels, teen pregnancy and porn (among many other things) it was refreshing to see the concept of love have a fresh face. It gives me hope, even if just a little bit, that our country is starting to head in the right direction. Starting to realize what is important in life. It may seem like a stretch for me to be making this comparison, but if you haven't seen this movie I suggest that you check it out. I hope that you, too, will be heart-warmed and pleasantly surprised at Hollywood's refreshing change of pace.
