There's Something About Fireflies
I love summer, but it's hot. Not even hot, putrid. In spite of the fact that it is so hot there is one part of the day that I love the most. That part of the day where the sun has just dipped down and it starts getting darker, it isn't too dark yet, but just dark enough that it is a comfortable temperature to sit outside. It's the time that all of the night creatures come out and start to sing their songs. I love the sound of crickets chirping, the leaves rustling and the sound of the cicadas in the trees.
I was sitting on my porch reading my Bible tonight and enjoying the beautiful weather when suddenly, it hit me. I was reading in 1 Corinthians 13, "the love chapter". Many use this chapter in context with relationships and is often used at weddings. The thing I love about this chapter is that it was written by the Apostle Paul as a letter to the church in context of spiritual gifts and the relationship and function of the church as a unit. I was reading about God's love for the church as a people and I started to think about all of the ways He shows His love to us. As I was sitting there my favorite thing about summer happened... the fireflies came out.
I have always had a thing for fireflies. I remember catching them all the time and just staring at them, waiting for them to glow. I was always so intrigued by how the lights got in the fireflies in the first place. As I grew older my wonder didn't fade in the least bit. I slowly realized, though, that in order for them to maintain their beauty and wonder you have to leave them alone. I was never all that conscious of the fact that I was killing them when I caught them. I guess that's some of the beauty that goes with growing up. You learn to appreciate the smaller wonders in life.
Tonight in particular, I was struck by the lightning bugs. What an amazing God we serve that He loves us enough to create fireflies, He loves us enough to create beautiful creatures that we can enjoy. I had a new found understanding of Christ's love for us that is displayed in His word. What a humbling experience to have, to enjoy His creation and marvel at His masterpieces. Crazy that we don't even need to go any further than our yards to see the world that He has made.
I love summer, and I don't think I appreciate it enough. Sometimes it takes a moment away, just you and God, to realize what is most important. I'm glad that He can speak through the simplest of ways, quietly whispering to each of us, "I love you." I can't think of a better way to end my evening.
